Day 1 - travelling to Cambodia

A long travel day today from Sydney to Phnom Penh Cambodia. We were up at 4am to check in at 5 for our flight to Singapore. We stayed at Rydges Hotel at the airport so only had to walk across the road. The first flight to Singapore left right on time at 7.55 and landed in Singapore ahead of time. After a couple of hours looking at shops in Changi we headed to the gate.

The flight from Singapore to Phnom Penh was a little late leaving but only a 2 hour flight. Arrived in Phnom Penh about 6pm where we were met by the TripADeal guide, Rin. There are 20 people in the group and since there was the option for standard or premium accommodation, the group is spread across two hotels. We upgraded and the hotel is nice - clean, comfortable rooms, lovely pool and a restaurant and bar at the top of the hotel with a lovely view of the city.

First impressions of Phnom Penh from our drive to the hotel: more modern than I expected but still very much an Asian city, chaotic traffic, lots of markets. We were not able to get our bus to the front of our hotel because construction is happening next door and even at 7pm there was heavy machinery in the street which the bus couldn't pass. The bus pulled up 200m from the hotel and we got our luggage out and walked from there. Rin was very apologetic but it really wasn't an issue.

We had dinner and a drink in the restaurant, joined by a couple from Perth who have done a lot of travelling. It was very pleasant and the food was good and very cheap.

Looking forward to seeing more of the city tomorrow - lots planned. It's very hot and humid too.
